Drug Addiction Statistics

As per 2010 National Survey on Drug Usage and Health conducted by US government, it was found that more than 22 million American citizens or 9% of the total population use illegal drugs and are victims of drug addiction. This staggering fact alone displays how severe and complicated drug abuse has become in recent times.

History Of Drug Addiction In The United States

When the New World or the present day America was discovered by Columbus, a lot of traders, craftsmen and artisans descended on this continent. Along with them, they brought the sinful pleasures of using addiction-prone substances. It started with tobacco, which was introduced by the team of Columbus itself, which soon gave way to alcohol and hard drinks. Opium and cocaine was anyways grown in and around South America which soon found its way into North America, and in no time, tobacco, alcohol and opium became the most favourite 'recreational' drugs for Americans.

Although there was no government supported regulation, but a pamphlet from 18th century advised against usage of any drink or substance "which is liable to steal away a man's senses and render him foolish, irascible, uncontrollable and dangerous."

Finally, it was in 1970, when the famous Controlled Substance Act was passed by Congress, which identified and prohibited usages of multi substance narcotic and synthetic products.

Approximately 9% of the total population of the state reported usage of illegal drugs and narcotics substances.
